Founded in 1955, China Renmin University Press (CRUP) is the first university press established in the People’s Republic of China. It was nominated the national publishing center of humanities and social sciences textbooks for higher education by the Ministry of Education in 1982, listed as one of the nation’s top 100 publishers in 2009, won the China Publishing Government Award for Outstanding Publishers three time in 2001, 2018 and 2021. It is one of a few publishers who has swept all the national-level publishing prizes.
CRUP has always insisted on the correct publishing guideline, upheld the publishing pursuit of “producing select textbooks and academic works to cultivate talents of humanities and social sciences,” and carried out a high-quality publishing strategy. It has published a whole range of textbooks and academic works valuable for the dissemination of civilization and the accumulation of culture, and spreading advanced culture with outstanding publications, it has become a base and flag for China’s humanities and social sciences publication.
CRUP has made it its mission to serve higher education, serve teachers and teaching, has built a complete textbook system covering all the disciplines of humanities and social sciences, and been recognized as the most important publishing base of textbooks for higher education. With red genes running through its veins, it is a champion of the red publishing front. Devoted to the research, publishing and publicity of Marxist theories and their adaptations to China and the times, it has won the name of a “Red Publisher.” It has always been a vanguard at the academic forefront, striven for the thriving of academic development, published classic series under the flag of humanities and social sciences, and forged a leading brand in the country’s humanities and social sciences publishing. It has made constant efforts to tell China’s stories well and make China’s voice heard, made an international publishing brand featuring overseas introduction of high-end academic publications, established several overseas branches, initiated the founding of the Belt & Road Publishing Cooperative, and played the role of a pioneer in the “going global” of Chinese culture and book publication. With publishing its mainstay and driven by innovation, it keeps producing multi-layered convergent publishing products targeted at education, academics and the mass market, and has become a leader in the country’s all-media multi-form publishing.
“Serving the interest of readers and keeping in pace with the times,” CRUP has carried out Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era to great lengths, implemented the New Development Concept, promoted high-quality development, lent force to the accelerated construction of China’s independent knowledge base, and contributed to the cause of building China into a great modern socialist country.
Over the years, CRUP has been dedicated to building a platform for international culture exchange, and greatly promoted Sino-foreign academic and cultural communication. Featuring the international publication of high-end academic works, up to the present, CRUP has licensed over 3000 book copyrights overseas covering more than 40 languages, established partnership with over a thousand publishers in more than 60 countries, and opened overseas branches in Israel, Romania, Mongolia, Italy and Kazakhstan, effectively introducing Chinese culture to the world. Through the construction of an international publishing platform, CRUP has been endeavoring to cultivate a brand of national publication, and strengthen the soft power of Chinese culture for international communication by telling China’s stories well, interpreting Chinese characteristics well and making China’s voice heard.
